Matrix Product States Algorithms and Continuous Systems
A generic method to investigate many-body continuous-variable systems is
pedagogically presented. It is based on the notion of matrix product states
(so-called MPS) and the algorithms thereof. The method is quite versatile and
can be applied to a wide variety of situations. As a first test, we show how it
provides reliable results in the computation of fundamental properties of a
chain of quantum harmonic oscillators achieving off-critical and critical
relative errors of the order of 10^(-8) and 10^(-4) respectively. Next, we use
it to study the ground state properties of the quantum rotor model in one
spatial dimension, a model that can be mapped to the Mott insulator limit of
the 1-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. At the quantum critical point, the
central charge associated to the underlying conformal field theory can be
computed with good accuracy by measuring the finite-size corrections of the
ground state energy. Examples of MPS-computations both in the finite-size
regime and in the thermodynamic limit are given. The precision of our results
are found to be comparable to those previously encountered in the MPS studies
of, for instance, quantum spin chains. Finally, we present a spin-off
application: an iterative technique to efficiently get numerical solutions of
partial differential equations of many variables. We illustrate this technique
by solving Poisson-like equations with precisions of the order of 10^(-7).Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, final versio
Nonperturbative renormalization group in a light-front three-dimensional real scalar model
The three-dimensional real scalar model, in which the symmetry
spontaneously breaks, is renormalized in a nonperturbative manner based on the
Tamm-Dancoff truncation of the Fock space. A critical line is calculated by
diagonalizing the Hamiltonian regularized with basis functions. The marginal
() coupling dependence of the critical line is weak. In the broken
phase the canonical Hamiltonian is tachyonic, so the field is shifted as
. The shifted value is determined as a function of
running mass and coupling so that the mass of the ground state vanishes.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX, 6 Postscript figures, uses revTeX and epsbox.sty. A

Trio-One: Layering Uncertainty and Lineage on a Conventional DBMS
Trio is a new kind of database system that supports data, uncertainty, and lineage in a fully integrated manner. The first Trio prototype, dubbed Trio-One, is built on top of a conventional DBMS using data and query translation techniques together with a small number of stored procedures. This paper describes Trio-One's translation scheme and system architecture, showing how it efficiently and easily supports the Trio data model and query language
Quantum Nernst effect in a bismuth single crystal
We report a theoretical calculation explaining the quantum Nernst effect
observed experimentally in a bismuth single crystal. Generalizing the
edge-current picture in two dimensions, we show that the peaks of the Nernst
coefficient survive in three dimensions due to a van Hove singularity. We also
evaluate the phonon-drag effect on the Nernst coefficient numerically. Our
result agrees with the experimental result for a bismuth single crystal.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Proceedings of ISQM-Tokyo '0
Evaluation of the palatability and toxicity of candidate baits and toxicants for mongooses (\u3ci\u3eHerpestes auropunctatus\u3c/i\u3e)
The small Indian mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus) is an invasive pest species responsible for damage to native avian, reptile, and amphibian species on Hawaii, Croatia, Mauritius, and several Caribbean Islands, among other regions.Mongoose control has been pursued through a variety of means, with varying success. One toxicant, diphacinone, has been shown to be effective in mongooses and is co-labeled in a rodenticide bait for mongoose control in Hawaii; however, preliminary observations indicate low performance as a mongoose toxicant due likely to poor consumption. We evaluated the efficacy and palatability of 10 commercial rodenticide baits, technical diphacinone powder, and two alternative acute toxicants against mongooses in laboratory feeding trials. We observed poor acceptance and subsequent low overall mortality, of the hard grain-based pellets or block formulations typical of most of the commercial rodenticide baits. The exception was Tomcat® bait blocks containing 0.1% bromethalin, an acute neurotoxin, which achieved up to 100% mortality. Mortality among all other commercial rodenticide formulations ranged from 10 to 50%. Three-day feedings of 0.005% technical diphacinone formulated in fresh minced chicken achieved 100% mortality. One-day feedings of para-aminopropiophenone (PAPP), a chemical that reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, achieved 100% mortality at concentrations of 0.10 to 0.15%. Bait acceptance of two sodium nitrite formulations (similar toxic mode of action as PAPP) was relatively poor, and mortality averaged 20%. In general, commercially produced rodenticide baits were not preferred by mongooses and had lower mortality rates compared to freshly prepared meat bait formulations. More palatable baits had higher consumption and achieved higher mortality rates. The diphacinone bait registered for rat and mongoose control in Hawaii achieved 20% mortality and was less effective than some of the other commercial or candidate fresh bait products evaluated in this study
Variational Calculation of the Effective Action
An indication of spontaneous symmetry breaking is found in the
two-dimensional model, where attention is paid to the
functional form of an effective action. An effective energy, which is an
effective action for a static field, is obtained as a functional of the
classical field from the ground state of the hamiltonian interacting
with a constant external field. The energy and wavefunction of the ground state
are calculated in terms of DLCQ (Discretized Light-Cone Quantization) under
antiperiodic boundary conditions. A field configuration that is physically
meaningful is found as a solution of the quantum mechanical Euler-Lagrange
equation in the limit. It is shown that there exists a nonzero field
configuration in the broken phase of symmetry because of a boundary
effect.Comment: 26 pages, REVTeX, 7 postscript figures, typos corrected and two

Development of Root Caries Prevention by Nano-Hydroxyapatite Coating and Improvement of Dentin Acid Resistance
There is no established method for optimizing the use of dentin to prevent root caries, which are increasing in the elderly population. This study aimed to develop a new approach for root caries prevention by focusing on bioapatite (BioHap), a new biomaterial, combined with fluoride. Bovine dentin was used as a sample, and an acid challenge was performed in three groups: no fluoride (control group), acidulated phosphate fluoride treatment (APF group), and BioHap + APF treatment (BioHap group). After applying the new compound, the acid resistance of dentin was compared with that of APF alone. The BioHap group had fewer defects and an increased surface hardness than the APF group. The BioHap group had the smallest lesion depth and least mineral loss among all groups. Using a scanning electron microscope in the BioHap group showed the closure of dentinal tubules and a coating on the surface. The BioHap group maintained a coating and had higher acid resistance than the APF group. The coating prevents acid penetration, and the small particle size of BioHap and its excellent reactivity with fluoride are thought to have contributed to the improvement of acid resistance in dentin. Topical fluoride application using BioHap protects against root caries
Pressure dependence of the thermoelectric power of single-walled carbon nanotubes
We have measured the thermoelectric power (S) of high purity single-walled
carbon nanotube mats as a function of temperature at various hydrostatic
pressures up to 2.0 GPa. The thermoelectric power is positive, and it increases
in a monotonic way with increasing temperature for all pressures. The low
temperature (T < 40 K) linear thermoelectric power is pressure independent and
is characteristic for metallic nanotubes. At higher temperatures it is enhanced
and though S(T) is linear again above about 100 K it has a nonzero intercept.
This enhancement is strongly pressure dependent and is related to the change of
the phonon population with hydrostatic pressure.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Detecting Determinism in High Dimensional Chaotic Systems
A method based upon the statistical evaluation of the differentiability of
the measure along the trajectory is used to identify in high dimensional
systems. The results show that the method is suitable for discriminating
stochastic from deterministic systems even if the dimension of the latter is as
high as 13. The method is shown to succeed in identifying determinism in
electro-encephalogram signals simulated by means of a high dimensional system.Comment: 8 pages (RevTeX 3 style), 5 EPS figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. E
